Karate uniforms, sit-ups and sore butts

Canvas uniforms, particularly the very heavy expensive ones, have a very large seam which runs down the middle of the pants where the material has been folded several times and stitched together. This seam will sit right in the middle of your back side.

Problem: When doing high repetitions of sit-ups, this center seam can literally saw a hole through your skin.

Solution: Place a strip of gaffa tape over the seam!

We all know most of the world is held together with gaffa tape and this is no exception!

If you have had the misfortune to receive one of these seam cuts you may soon become familiar with the pain this can cause and you’ll be amazed about how long it can take to heal.

Visitor comment:

“My own Gi is one of the heavier, thicker ones, and although usually sit-ups cause me tremendous discomfort in my underdeveloped abdominal muscles, one day I must have had that seam in the wrong place. It didn’t hurt so bad while I was doing the sit-ups, but when I came home I had a huge wound(!) at my butt which was literally bleeding. I still have the scar, now about 2 months later, and it was very painful for a very long time! Beware of the evil seam!”

You could substitue V-Ups instead of doing the classic sit up. There is less pressure on your rear, less pressure on your lower back, they are more effective, and they also target your lower abs as well which is a trouble area for most people.

If you don’t know what a V-up is I’ll explain:

Lay flat with your head and feet elevated about 4-6 inches off the ground and with your arms stretched back behind your head. Simply lift your legs straight up (without bending them) at the same time attempt to touch your toes.

This has a “crunch” affect and will target all areas with the exception of maybe the obliques. Give them a try and feel the burn somewhere besides your bum!

What is gaffa tape? Is it duct tape? Scotch tape? Adhesive tape? If we cannot identify, then describe? Woven? Cloth? Plastic? Clear? Opaque?

I just wear something under it like breifs and boxers together.

crunches are better than sit ups for several reasons, one being the evil seam. Also crunches don’t put strain on your neck.

Much energy is wasted in the sit up. Crunches, when done properly, do a better job of working the abs.

I have found out also about the seam of all evil, and it can be verry painfull, what works for me is wearing cycling shorts, or tight running shorts under my gi, when the material rubs it does not rub against your skin. thats my tip of the day !!

(Sometimes in the US called duct tape) A fabric-based sticky tape (black or silver in colour) which is used to fasten down cables temporarily and for 1001 other uses in theatre. Its big advantage is that, although it adheres firmly to most surfaces, it can be removed without causing any damage to the surface, unlike, for example, sellotape. Utterly invaluable!

seam, what seam? ooohhh THAT seam! meh, seen as im the only girl in the dojo i have to wear a white t-shirt of my brothers & cause hes 6 foot 2 & im only about 5 foot 5 it saves me from evil seams =)

In response to “duct tape”, it’s actually really, truly called “Duck” tape; it’s a brand name. The original brand name was “Tuck” tape and it was developed in Canada by a guy from New York. The brand name was changed by the people who bought the company from its founder, for the sake of “name change, due to new ownership” but also because it was thought that “duck” would be “easier for people to remember”. I don’t remember the man’s name — and my “reliable source” has passed on — but that source was my father’s aunt on his mom’s side, Gloria Lilling. My dad’s Aunt Gloria had dated the tape-entrepreneur, while they were in their late teens (early 1900′s) — but had rejected his proposal of marriage — because she considered his bald head a “turn-off”! His tape was a hit — and Aunt Gloria never married (too picky!)

Don’t mind me; I just logged on to make sure of the correct spelling of the word “gi” (thought it had an “h” in the middle!). My daughter’s boyfriend has a Black Belt. (I do, too — to hold up the jeans I bought, last year; now that I’ve lost weight, they fall off, without it — but I don’t know any martial arts, myself!)

Uh, nope it is actually DUCT tape. It was originally developed for sealing up ductwork. Gaffer’s tape is sightly different. Gaffer’s tape is highly sticky cloth tape, usually black. It is used in the theater and in film to cover cables and rigging of lights. Duct tape on the other hand is cloth tape with a plastic coating to make the seal airtight. It is silver to match the color of aluminum ductwork. Duck is simply a brand name of duct tape that plays off of the fact that most people have no idea of the origin of duct tape and instead use “duck” tape as it sounds like a more familiar word. But now you know the truth. And it will set you free. Provided you are not taped down with gaffer’s tape.

I am going to tak eup karate this thursday. can someone please tell me what do I wear inside before I put on my qi. I am a female and I am wondering if I need to wear a t-shirt inside?
If I don’t weat a layer of shirt inside, what if my qi suddenly loosen and came off?

Thanks for helping me to overcome this fear

  14. Colleen said:

I wear a sports bra under my gi. Black or white is my personal choice, and I like the bras that have thick straps, similar to a tank top. Lycra is good, it gives support. Not having hooks on the back also eliminates injuries from sit ups. Also, the slits in the sides of the pants show your underwear sometimes, so try to get underwear with a wide side on them (“granny panties”) or bike shorts (no seam!). :)

  16. Jessika said:

I just wear a regular bra. I practice Wado-Ryu and I am currently a yellow belt. My Sensie throw me the other day by my gi and it came open. He and threst of the class just pretended it didn’t happen. So I wouldn’t worry so much. It’s just a little skin.

Why are we argueing about different types of tape? lol

  18. Dillon said:

ALWAYS in North America it is called duct tape…

  19. Nely said:

well what I do is wear a regular bra and put on a white shirt.
My sensi said it is traditional that you wear a white shirt under the gi. Or if not a white shirt he said to wear nothing undernearth, which he meant towards the guys.

Better wear a white shirt to save your self the embrasssment of your gi falling off during sparring time!

why not do all these methods?

  23. Mike said:

“better” wow – that an iffy word – because better can be defined in many was

first off sit-ups should not put any strain on your neck either – it depends on if you do them properly – crunches if done incorrectly will hurt the neck too.

the evil seam – OK I’ll give you that one the seam is less of a factor in crunches – but there are was around the one

“crunches do a better job of working the abs” – if you meam the isolate the abs more – you are right – but does that make them better? The Iliopsoas muscle group is use in addition to the abs in a sit-up – that is the muscle that connects the thigh to the spine through the hip area – this muscle is esential to a high chamber needed for kicking so in that reguard the sit-up is better
