Upper wrist block (Jodan Ko-Uke)

Jodan Ko Uke is a wrist block (ko means wrist) used to block upper (Jodan) level strikes, eg a punch to the face. Jodan Ko Uke uses only the top of the wrist as the blocking surface and thus requires more skill and accuracy than Jodan Uke (upper block) which uses the whole forearm.

How to perform a upper wrist block

In a finished left-hand Jodan Ko Uke position, your left Ko Uke wrist should be around four fists away from your head, with the thumb pressed against the middle finger. The other hand rests in front of your solar plexus, open handed, about one fist away from your body.

With speed bring your right Ko Uke wrist upward and slightly forward, finishing just above eye level with your thumb pressing against your middle finger. Simultaneously return with your left hand to the center of your body.

The video clip shows Sensei Terry Lyon (5th Dan) performing upper wrist block. Please note: The starting position of the arms depends on the previously filmed technique.
