Wrist block, palmheel (ko uke shotei uchi)

This double block uses the top of the wrist to block the upper level strike (Ko Uke) while using the palm heel (Shotei Uke) to block the middle level strike. This combination has been featured in the Karate Kid movie as “painting the fence up and down”.

How to perform wrist block, palmheel (ko uke shotei uchi)

Begin in the ready position with both hands tucked up under your shoulders. As your attacker’s punch nears your face, bring your wrist upwards to block his strike with the top of your wrist (Ko Uke). As his second strike to your middle comes in, snap your wrist downward to strike at the top of his wrist.

The video clip shows Sensei Terry Lyon (5th Dan) performing Wrist Block, Palmheel (Ko Uke Shotei Uchi).

Wrist block, palmheel (ko uke shotei uchi): points to remember

  • When performing the block, press the thumb firmly against the middle finger
  • You must snap the wrist upward into the block to gain speed and power. It is no good to just lift your arm.
  • You must also snap the wrist downward to perform the middle palm heel block. If you hit your attackers wrist hard enough, this strike can break his wrist.
