The art of karate-do was created for self protection (body) self discipline (mind) and self enlightenment(spirit). It is not an ego building exercise to determine ones level, standard or position. There is nothing in the teachings of great masters of the art that it is there for challenging others or testing ones skills against those who have or don’t have skills in the art. By correct practice, according to traditional teachings one overcomes struggle created by ones own mind and polishes techniques that improves the quality of ones self defence ability. Like many great teachers, my teacher and his teacher taught the art for its true purpose of Budo. We live on this earth school for a short time. During this period we are faced with many great challenges and traditional karate helps us to cope with many of these. It does not increase the challenges by inflating or deflating the ego. Whether we believe this or not we are all spiritual beings on a human journey. Life on Earth is just one tiny institution of learning. Many ask how do we know if this is true? It depends who you talk with and whose teachings you follow.
This magnificent art of karate-do, so brilliantly designed by masters in the field of karate- do that has innumerable ways of defence in every or any form of attack. The masters have thought of almost everything. It has to be divinely inspired. Sometimes it goes beyond human comprehension. Many who practice the art have settled for just the physical, while others have gone just beyond into the mental. There is another part of this art that transcends these two into the spiritual. People say it is just a physical art, others say it is mental and so on. It depends who teaches you and what is shared. Can we say education stops at primary or high school or university? Education is for life and so is karate-do. If this is so then it must be the three domains: the physical, mental and spiritual. Those who practice just the physical, in most cases give up as soon as the body starts to ache, or old age sets in. those who do it for the mind and body give up when the mind tiers, how those who practice it beyond these two levels do so for life. Those who are seeking will get a clearer understanding from many good books in the market. I have written two books Discovering martial arts and Budo–ka. These will also help the reader.
Life is greater than you imagine, further than you know, more fulfilling than you understand and more beautiful than your visualization.
