to tie a karate belt (obi) properly you should start with both ends behind your back so that the belt is half wrapped around you then cross them over so they come to the front. after this even them up and then tie left over right(or right over left) under both the loose end and the part wrapped around your waist , then tie right over left(or left over right). you should be left with two even ends in the quarter to three position. hope this helps.
