We don’t just hand out degrees and make peopel “masters” either. To put this into perspective I’ve been training since 1989 and I’m only a 2nd degree. There are only a few 8 degrees outside of Japan/Okinawa. Today in the US everyone is a 10th degree grandmaster. It’s a slap in the face. Just to get out 5 degree blakc belt you have to be a black belt in another style/art.
As far as the colored belt things goes…it is a myth about getting dirtier. Judo founder Kano was the first to use a belt for school children as training goals and to pair them up by level for competition purposes.
Prior to that people just used any piece of cloth to hold their gi, which was just simple peasant clothing, shut as they did not have the ties back then.
Originally there was only white, brown, and black belts. The other colors were not added until after WWII.
