Thankyou for posting.
Very clear footage indeed.

I am presently doing a lot of research into Tanto dori, and the first & last on the video you posted were the ones that Otsuka I used for Demos, but I believe weren't listed in the ones he submitted to the Butokukai in 1939.
Are they now in the Renmei syllabus of Tanto dori, and if so do they have 'names'?

Any information greatly appreciated.
Thankyou.

wild guess:

1st one: kote gaeshi dori
last one: shiho nage dori or kote nage dori. However, kote nage dori is already used for an other technique.

How about, 2nd one Kinukuguri?

But, why does it matter? It's not what it's called, it's how you do it.

BTW. Kenkyukai, welcome to the forum, looking forwrd to seeing what you can contribute. Oh, your www. link doesn't work for me.

Hello Kenkyukai

Welcome to the forum. You had a nice site on Geosites before they pulled the proverbial plug. I might be moving down there myself one day if all goes according to plan.

Scaramouche

hm, in my opinion:

1: kote gaeshi
2: kote nage
3: unga dori - also called tsuki age dori
4: zu dori
5: shiho nage / kote nage

as for kinukuguri, I'm trying to figure out what it means.

kinu: 絹: silk
kuguri: 潜: side door - submerge conceal  hide  lower (voice)  hush

can't really make anything out of it, perhaps a smooth way to cross into the shikaku?

perhaps I'm way off with the kanji and seperation of the word, but this was the only thing I could find.

Kinukuguri
Kinukatsugi

these are all jujitsu throwing terms that are common to many jujitsu schools.
Our throws are based on Shindo Yoshin Ryu so we use the Shindo Yoshin ryu names.

Kinu - silk cloth
Kuguru - duck under
Katsugu - hoist up

Sometimes the meaning is obvious.
Sometimes the meaning is some esoteric term that is ...well..esoteric meaning unless you have received the higher teachings they make no sense.

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this Forum.

I read with interest the messages regarding Tanto Dori and also the mention a couple of times of my home county of Devon.

With regard to Tanto Dori and all other matters regarding Wado-Ryu and this is my own personal point of view, I would rather spend five minutes in the dojo in the company of someone who has studied and learnt directly from both the late Grandmaster and the present Grandmaster than spend hours researching the internet, books etc. The opportunity to be able to learn this way is sadly becoming less and less with time. But while that oppurtunity exists you should grab it with both hands, especially because for some of you it is right on your doorstep!

With regard to the naming of the various Tanto Dori, it has been my personal experience that within the Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Renmei of which I am a long standing member, the Tanto Dori are numbered rather than named to help the process of learning and reconigition. There are as I am sure you all know the set of ten Tanto Dori, but of course there are so many more after that.

With Kind Regards,

Peter Hill

Hello Peter and a warm welcome from myself on the South Coast, near the sight of the next summer course.

I have taken that opportunity on many occasions and in the run up to my third dan grading I was taken aback by the sheer level of the tanto dori instruction I got. My notes don't even do it justice.

That was before this 'recession and silly petrol prices' as it took me out from work for a day plus a pretty penny as well. Obviously it was worth it, just waiting for my premium bonds to come in now.

Firstly Sheppy & Scaramouche thankyou for your kind welcome.
Gary- you told me about all-karate mate so you only have yourself to blame!

Thankyou everyone for your help/information. Especially AJ.

Hello to Peter, good to see your still about.
You are right about everything being on the doorstep.
Are there any more open courses with Shiomitsu Hanshi planned for your Dojo?

Sheppy-Incidentally new webby now up and running after a debacle with Geocities.
If you ever get here be sure to pop in for some training, a good chat and an Isotonic beer after wink.gif You're most welcome.

Getting back to the Tanto Dori the suggested terminology is very helpful.
I wasn't too sure if the two in question had ever been named.
I find the names for the other 7 very interesting, especially Unga Dori, does that translate as canal/waterway?

Once again thankyou all, for your help and your warm welcome.

Thank you for all the prompt replies and the kind welcomes.

I am sorry if my first posting came across as if I was about to try and kick someones !!!! that was not my intention, I was just trying to speak from the heart and speak honestly.

Shiomitsu Sensei visits our group regularly and details of his forthcoming visits to Devon can be found by going to the following link:

http://www.devonwadoryu.co.uk/4818/index.html

These courses are open to anyone and all are welcome.

With regard to money, it is an easy excuse to make. If your will and determination are strong enough you will find the money and make the neccessary sacrifies, but again I do not mean to offend and this is just my own personal point of view.

With Kind Regards,

Peter Hill
