The forum has been quiet of late so I was wondering if anyone have any interesting memorabilia from their years (in some cases many years) in Wado, although not necessarily wado specific.

Well most of the bruises have gone now but I still have some stuff - mainly saké bottles and cups - gathering dust here.

As silly as it sounds, I have my original Karate license - and I love it.
Most have newer models and if I am being honest nicer looking, but I am glad I still have my old issue. In addition to the "retro chique" there are the signatures and comments I have in it. Wasn't it MasterCard that coined the phrase "there are some things that money cant buy...priceless" Gary |

I ask because I had the honour of handling the square cloth badge that Tatsuo Suzuki was sporting when he did Tanto Dori that was photographed and later printed on page 24 in H.D. Plees' book Karate (Beginner to Black Belt).
Its only a cloth badge but I felt like I was touching history. |

Anyway all I posses is a 1977 'Combat' mag with a feature on Tatsuo Suzuki and an advertising poster for the 1984 Transatlantic Cup Karate Tournament USA vs England and signed by Eddie Daniels then 5th Dan (Team Coach), Ronnie Cottrell (6th Dan Head of Delegation) , A. Baily, T Pottage (4th Dan Chief Referee), Terry Daly, Leslie Fairclough plus others.

Years ago I obtained two 8mm cine films, with soundtrack on separate cassettes, of Kata Seishan & Chinto performed, if I remember correctly, by Kobayashi Sensei.
I think they're from the early 70's. I haven't seen them for years, as no one seems to have a cine projector anymore, but I remember trying to get the soundtrack to coincide with the film. I used to collect articles from Combat etc but sadly these got lost when I had to move suddenly. (Do a runner). I still have though an article from the Daily Mirror entitled 'Our Karate chaps fall to the Japs' (Totally un-PC), which tells of the 'big coup' in 1979 when Master Suzuki ousted all the British instructors from the committee of the UKKW. Obviously that was quite a pivotal moment in UK Wado as many people left and new associations were formed. As an aside may I wish a very happy Christmas to all, with best wishes for a successful, happy & healthy 2010. |

The problem was they left knowing very little actual wado ryu which is why the British scene today has so much 'wado based' karate that is actually tournament based karate. Which is really quite different from Wado ryu. oneya |

Kenkyukai, Any chance you can one day scan the article and share it with the forum?
And the same to you. |

Yes of course, I believe it's still inside my old UKKW licence book. It's only a short column, but I'll scan it and try and put it on here. If I can't (not too good with PC's) I'll quote it. |

I also have my original karate licence from the late 60's. Signed by Hironori Ohtsuka in 1968 and 1970. I also have a hand written poster Sensei Ohtsuka wrote for our club of his famous poem:- Bu no michi wa tada arigato to na omoiso wa no michi kiwame wa wo motomu michi . This is dated February 1970.
This poster used to hang in our dojo for many years but is now in a much safer place. |

Maybe i will see you again in the new year. I will try to remember to bring them. As you may guess i am very loathe to let them out of my sight. I also have an extensive collection of paper cuttings from the early days of wado in the U.K.
