Hello all,

As it's a bit quiet here (and the fact that its a bit overdue for me to launch a discussion topic), I thought I'd pitch in with this.

I have recently "re-engaged" with my Daito/Kobudo sensei (after a work enforced hiatus).

He mentioned that his group (Quentin Ball's - Nine Circles), had some footage on YT of a recent "Enbu" they had done, so I looked it up and here it is:

Daito Ryu

Bojutsu and Hanbo

Now, I know it not SYR, but I thought that in the light of Ashley's recent IA thread, it might help breathe some slightly different air into our Wado lungs.

Thought you guys would appreciate it.

Gary

I quite liked them, was only disappointed that the camera was so far away and that I couldn't really see what was actually happening. But personally a flavour I don't mind at all.

Thanks Gary.

The camera was far away so I watched another video of the same people at this link

Daito Ryu, more

You can see more of the techniques and movement. Some attacks were off line but heyho (heiho), it was the responses that were the things to be having a look at anyway.

Hi Gary

Thanks for that - nice to know Steve Wright has a morning job too!

Which branch of Daitoryu is it they train? As you say, its not SYR but there is a theory (and only that) that they are second cousin's thrice removed..(read Ellis Adamour article on Aikinews website).

This link came up after I watched it, presumably the same group? Might satisfy Scaramouche's desire for close up action. Nice zu-dori about 38 seconds in.

Edit: Sorry folks, posted same link as Wadoka. A week is a long time in politics but five minutes is an age on this forum!

Hi Ben,

Its Shogen Okabayashi's Hakuhokai.

Actually, I have heard that the "Steve Wright" featured in these videos, sadly lost his life last year - not long after these were filmed.

Real shame as I think he was only 22 at the time.

I spoke to Shingo Ohgami a couple of years back about Daito, and he expressed an interest that I was training in it. He mentioned something about it being related to the "Yoshin - ryu" lineage.

Yes I just read that too - climbing accident in Greece.

Re Yoshinryu connection, the school was extremely widespread as you know with all its various branches. But there is one little known stream called Shingetsu Muso Ryu - quite karate like in its pair techniques - which I understand is linked somehow.

Dangerous territory this though, if IA gets a hold of it it could open a whole new series of daft books and video based on tenuous links and squeeze to fit solutions...!

I have always thought daitoryu is impressive apart from when they start doing those aikido - Seagal style one man takes on 10 performances. I shake my head then and think this isn't a patch on Claussau v Kato.

Apparently, Okabayashi studied Shito-ryu before starting Daito-ryu.

I know exactly the techniques you are referring to, and I have never seen them when I have practiced with this group (thats not to say they don't).

Gary

[edit] just noticed the spelling faux pas - sorry about that.

I think blackcat may be referring to when you have 5 people say attacking you and you magically create a single heap of bodies with you standing proud, so to speak.

I was yes. I should imagine it is more for demonstration really. I should imagine they have equal grounds to poke fun at us karate folks for doing the 5 man kata fight demo's too.

I knew what Ben was referring to.

As done here at 2:38

As I say, haven't seen it done at the dojo where I was training, but then again there was usually only 4 of us including the instructor - at times.
